V.I. RC&D Awarded $2.78 Million NOAA Habitat Restoration Economic Stimulus Grant to Reduce Watershed Runoff and Protect Coastal & Marine Habitats!
The Virgin Islands Resources Conservation & Development Council - in collaboration with DPNR, Coral Bay Community Council, Estate Fish Bay Homeowners Association, The Nature Conservancy, UVI Center for Marine & Environmental Studies, and various researchers from the University of San Diego and University of Texas-Austin among others, are delighted to announce that they have been awarded over $2.7 million in NOAA Coastal & Marine Habitat Restoration funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for their USVI Coastal Habitat Restoration through Watershed Stabilizationproject to execute erosion control work in St Croix (East End Bay) and in St. John (Coral Bay and Fish Bay watersheds).
The main goal of the project is to reduce sediment loading rates into the coastal waters of the USVI by approximately 100 tons by improving portions of foot trails and unpaved roads in each of the three watersheds. The project also contains a terrestrial and a marine monitoring component designed to both assess the effectiveness of erosion control measures in reducing sediment loads and improve our understanding of the linkages between terrestrial sediment inputs and coastal habitat condition.
The Virgin Islands Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc. (V.I. RC&D) is a locally organized, sponsored and led nonprofit organization that helps people in the territory plan and carry out activities that increase conservation of natural resources, support leadership development, and enhance the environment and standard of living in our communities. V.I. RC&D is successful because it provides USVI residents with the means to solve environmental problems and promote sustainable use of natural resources at the local level. V.I. RC&D was created and organized by local people, who define our goals and work with a broad range of public and private entities to achieve our objectives. Local people make the choices for the community - whether we work on land conservation & water management, land management, community development, or something unique to our particular area. In every case, local people are making the difference.
