VIERS (Virgin Islands Environ-mental Resource Station).
VIERS was established by the College of the Virgin Islands in 1966. It currently serves as an eco-camp and field station for students and scientists interested in environmental education, training and research on terrestrial, coastal and marine communities of small tropical islands. VIERS is situated on the remote southeast shore of St. John, at Lameshur Bay within the VI National Park and United Nations (UNESCO) Biosphere Reserve. Conference participants will tour the Resource Station and learn about environmental and scientific programs at the site. Additional information can be found online at: www.islands.org/virgin/viers/.
Coral Bay
The Coral Bay watershed is St. John's largest watershed, and is located in the southeastern portion of the island. It encompasses approximately 3,000 acres or 4.7 square miles. The watershed has severe topography, highly erodible soils, many miles of unpaved roads and significant new construction. These factors have all contributed to increased stormwater runoff and associated sedimentation in Coral Bay. A tour of the watershed will be given by a local scientist with a discussion surrounding the challenges and solutions to managing the area.
